This Special Issue aims at  demonstrating recent progress in the grain boundary research field covering  also new concepts as e.g. materials design via grain boundary engineering, the stabilization of nanocrystalline structures, and nonequilibrium phenomena due to irradiation, to mention only a few special cases.
